2017 Review from the President

As the year draws to a close let us reflect on some of the events and happenings of the 2017 season. The opening party held at the Virden Center, University of Delaware was a great success raising sustaining funds for ship upkeep and preservation. Many thanks to the Opening party Committee for all the dedicated work and volunteer hours spent in numerous planning sessions.

Excellent numbers of visitors toured the lightship. We thank our ship guide team for their very knowledgeable and interesting tour presentations. Our ship’s store volunteers did a great job of staffing the store and having a wide variety of souvenir items for purchase.

The Dirty Hands Gang deserves much appreciation for their many hours of work in keeping the Overfalls Lightship ready and inviting for our visitors. They also crewed the Lightship on her journey across the Bay to the Dorchester shipyard in New Jersey.

Thank you to our dedicated Board of Directors for volunteering their time and talents in keeping watch over the ongoing operations of the Foundation.

We are a little lonely in the absence of our ship who is wintering at the Dorchester Shipyard while having some routine maintenance performed such as painting the exterior structure and having 42 zincs (anti-corrosion elements on the hull) replaced. An impressed current anti-corrosion system is also being installed which should extend the time between haul outs.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the entire Lewes Community for their ongoing support of the Overfalls Lightship. Please visit the Overfalls display in the new Margaret Rollins Community Center and Lewes History Museum.

The SEVENTH! ANNUAL Anchor Drop, will be held December 31, at 11:30 PM at the Overfalls Lightship location - Canal Front Park on Pilottown Road.

Looking forward to the day, not too distant, when our proud lightship refreshed and renewed, will be sailing down the canal to rest in her newly dredged home.

Again, thank you to everyone from the Overfalls Foundation and sincere best wishes for a great 2018.

Albert Didden
President of the Overfalls Foundation.
