One Step Closer to National Historic Landmark Status

On November 2, 2010, an Overfalls Foundation delegation made a presentation to the Landmarks Committee to have the Lightship Overfalls become a National Historic Landmark.   Past President Dave Bernheisel reports that “it went very well and the committee voted unanimously to move our nomination to the next stage in the process.  To say that we were overjoyed is a gross understatement.”

It has been a long, tedious process to get us to this point and we still have a ways to go but this was the major hump in the process.  We would never have made it this far without the support of you and many other people to whom I have been sending e-mails of appreciation this morning. This support when the conventional thinking was that a National Historic Landmark designation for our lightship was a pipe dream that would go nowhere was a key factor in keeping this initiative alive over several years.

It's been over five years since we started this effort. Now, look where we are! Dave concludes, “It's the magic in that old red ship, it can make anything happen if we do our part.”
